Conservation & Land Management in Torbay

At Torbay Coast & Countryside Trust, we are dedicated to caring for and protecting over 1,700 acres of Torbay’s natural environment. From rugged coastline to ancient woodlands and open farmland, we manage these spaces to balance biodiversity, sustainability, public access, and recreation.

Smart Land Management for Wildlife and People

Our land management practices put conservation at the heart of everything we do. We manage:

  • 8 Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs)
  • Berry Head National Nature Reserve
  • Cockington Country Park
  • 40 miles of footpaths and bridleways
  • Extensive coastal, woodland and farmland habitats

We maintain these spaces to support both wildlife conservation and safe public access.

Supporting Wildlife Through Conservation Grazing

We use carefully managed livestock grazing to help protect and restore habitats for rare species. At Berry Head, Ruby Red cattle graze the cliffs, supporting the greater horseshoe bat population by encouraging beetle-rich habitats. Across our sites, Dorset cross sheep help maintain species-rich grasslands that support wild orchids and other native flora.

Tree Safety & Woodland Health

We carry out regular tree safety checks, remove storm-damaged trees, and care for our woodlands to protect both wildlife and visitors. Maintaining a healthy tree network helps keep over 40 miles of paths and trails open, safe, and accessible across Torbay.

Organic & Sustainable Farming

We farm over 700 acres across Torbay from our base at Occombe Farm. Our Ruby Red cattle and sheep are essential to maintaining natural habitats. Visitors can see our animals grazing in summer and housed in winter. Our approach supports:

  • Climate resilience
  • Sustainable local food systems
  • Biodiversity and landscape health

Sustainable Biomass Production

Our biomass woodchip fuel business at Occombe uses locally sourced timber, air-dried and chipped on site.
We supply renewable heating fuel to partners like The Sharpham Trust and Paignton Zoo, helping reduce carbon emissions and promote sustainable energy use.

Conservation Contracting Services

We offer land management contracting for other organisations and landowners. Our experienced team delivers conservation work across the region—generating income to support our charitable mission.

Keeping Torbay’s Outdoors Accessible

We maintain 40+ miles of public footpaths, including parts of the South West Coast Path, as well as rural cycle routes across Torbay. Our teams clear overgrowth, remove fallen trees, and keep routes safe, open, and well-signposted.
