SUMMARY:Autumn Migration Watch & Breakfast
DESCRIPTION:Date: Tuesday 4th November\, 7.15am – 10.15am (includes time for breakfast starting at 9.15am)\nLocation: Berry Head National Nature Reserve \nA great opportunity to immerse yourself in nature with an informative walk led by local bird expert Mike Langman. \nEarly November can produce some of the most spectacular overhead movements of birds but only early in the morning. Given the right conditions thousands of birds could be on the move in huge flocks\, Redwings and Fieldfare freshly arriving back from their breeding grounds of Scandinavia are joined by loose flocks of and Wood Pigeons. \nThere should be a supporting cast of finches including Brambling\, pipits and you just never know what else might turn up\, perhaps a passing Ring Ouzel\, Short-eared Owl\, Merlin or a Woodcock. Mike will guide you through what is going on and help identify these birds by shape and calls. \nThe early start optimises our chances of witnessing migration at its best. At about 9.15am after a good morning’s birdwatching we’ll warm ourselves up at the Guardhouse Café with a hearty full breakfast and tea/coffee \nMeet: Berry Head National Nature Reserve main car park\nCost: £35 Non Members\, £30 Members (Include a delicious cooked breakfast at Guardhouse Cafe). \nTo book call Mike Langman on 07833178855.

SUMMARY:Cirl Bunting Day
DESCRIPTION:Celebrating the Cirl with wildlife expert Mike Langman. \nWednesday 16th July  10am – 3.30pm   \nBerry Head is home to one of Britain’s rarest birds the Cirl Bunting\, but it’s not always been the case. Devon is not only the most important county for this rare bunting but historically also boasts its discovery in Britain. \nJoin local bird expert Mike Langman to watch and learn about the Cirl Bunting – its lifestyle\, history\, demise and spectacular recovery. We’ll spend time searching for the buntings that are resident on the headland and we’ll explore the work Torbay Coast and Countryside Trust are doing to protect this vulnerable species. During the day there will be a mix of short indoor presentations in the artillery store building and outside study. \nWe’ll of course look at other fascinating wildlife around the headland during the day. We will walk approximately 2miles during the day over mostly flat ground but will venture into the meadows. \nFree tea and coffee will be available in the artillery store building. There will be an hour break around 12.30 so bring a packed lunch and sit outside if the weather is fine to watch seabirds or porpoises from the headland. Or you could pop over to the Guardhouse Café for a meal\, cake or drink. \nWith over 40 years of study at Berry Head Mike knows the likely whereabouts of not only the birds but also other wildlife around this National Nature Reserve. \nA small group limited to 14 people. Minimum age 14 years. Not suitable for dogs. \nEvent price: \nTrust Members: £35\, Non Trust Members £40.

SUMMARY:Brixham 'Penguin’ walk with Mike Langman
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy breakfast at the Guardhouse Cafe and a wildlife stroll around Berry Head led by wildlife expert Mike Langman. \nJoin Mike and learn about the south coast’s largest Guillemot colony that should be bustling with life. We’ll have a close look at the colony\, its history and future\, plus the amazing adaptations enabling the Guillemot also known locally as the ‘Brixham Penguin’ to survive at sea and on the cliffs. Perhaps with some searching we’ll find it’s close relative the Razorbill and compare the species side by side. \nWe’ll take a look off the end of the headland the mixing of currents from Torbay and Lyme Bay always attracts not only the feeding Guillemots but other wildlife too. Depending on conditions on the day this might include Harbour Porpoise\, Grey Seal or seabirds like Gannet\, Manx Shearwater or even a Puffin. The breeding Fulmars in the quarry are always a favourite cackling to each other as arriving birds make several false landing attempts. \nWith over 40 years of study at Berry Head Mike knows the likely whereabouts of not only the birds and other wildlife around this National Nature Reserve. \nEngagement Officer Marije will also be on hand to explain why it is so important to protect the colony from disturbance during the breeding season. \nTicket Prices: \n\n\nNon Trust Member  £35.00\nTrust Member  £30.00

SUMMARY:National Whale & Dolphin Watch 2023
DESCRIPTION:Help us collect data about whales\, dolphins and porpoises around the UK. \nWatches and surveys will be taking place across the country to create a ‘snapshot’ view of what can be seen in our UK coastal waters. The data collected during this event will enable the Sea Watch Foundation to develop an idea of the distribution of whales\, dolphins and porpoises around the UK. This event is a great opportunity for everyone to become involved in the research which goes into understanding and protecting these magnificent creatures. \nJoin us at Berry Head on the headland between 7am until 5pm from 31st July until 4th August. \nNo need to book – just turn up at the end of the headland (with binoculars if you have them). \nIt would be helpful if you could plan to participate in blocks of at least one hour.

SUMMARY:Seabirds and Paella
DESCRIPTION:We’re unable to take bookings for this event at the moment whilst we monitor government guidelines on COVID-19. We are hoping to run this event and are reviewing how we can do so safely. Please do check back again soon or watch our social media pages for updates. \nLearn more about sea watching and migrating seabirds. Trawlers regularly return from a day’s fishing in Lyme Bay during the evening sometimes with flocks of seabirds following them. Skuas\, Shearwaters and Terns are all likely to be found among the gulls but identification can be tricky and local expert Mike Langman will pass on some of his 40 years’ experience of watching seabirds and indeed marine wildlife including the resident Harbour Porpoises. \nWe will sit at the bottom of the quarry during this evening watch and Mike will tell you how to watch and what to look for whatever the weather. The evening light provides some of the very best viewing opportunities for passing seabirds at Berry Head\, far better than the\, often\, silhouetted morning sightings\, however depending on weather conditions views might still be distant. \nBerry Head is perhaps the best place in Britain for seeing the globally threatened Balearic Shearwater although a sighting cannot be guaranteed! One thing that will be guaranteed is the delicious paella and a dessert at the Guardhouse Cafe!
