Torbay Coast and Countryside Trust are delighted to announce that the Cockington Memorial Rose Garden and Cockington Lakes have both received outstanding recognition in the 2017 Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Britain in Bloom and South West in Bloom Annual Awards.
These awards are a nationwide community gardening competition that attracts more than 3,000 cities, towns, villages and urban communities to participate every year, to help improve their natural environments, green space and public gardens. Projects are judged on their achievements in environmental responsibility, community participation and horticultural successes.
Judging for both projects took place at both Cockington sites in July attended by the Cockington Volunteer Group, Lead Gardener, Mardie Short and Trust Director, Damian Offer.
Last week the team learned of their great double victory with both the Rose Garden and the Lakes achieving ‘Level 5 – Outstanding’ in the ‘In Your Neighbourhood’ Category; particularly recognising the huge contribution made by the Trust volunteer groups.
Cockington Lead Gardener Mardie Short said:
“It’s fantastic for our volunteers to achieve not just one award, but two! Our regular Community and Long Term Volunteers thoroughly deserve this recognition and accolade. At the Trust we value and very much appreciate their commitment, contribution and support, without which Cockington Country Park would not look as impressive as it does. We would like to thank everyone of our amazing Trust volunteers; together we can make a difference and with their help we certainly do.”
Damian Offer, Director, Torbay Coast and Countryside Trust, said:
“We are absolutely delighted to receive such significant recognition towards the care and maintenance of these special places at Cockington”.
“We have also recently heard of two further acknowledgements from local horticultural awards, Bay Blooms. Again both the Rose Garden and the Lakes projects were awarded, achieving Highly Commended in the Bay Blooms Public Gardens Category. We are super proud of all involved in getting more recognition for Cockington Country Park and the Trust. Particular mention should also go to heritage and environmental contractors WM Long Reach for their sensitive handling of the Lakes restoration last year”
It has been a successful year for Cockington Country Park and the Trust; securing awards with Keep Britain Tidy’s Green Flag Scheme and ICE South West Civil Engineering Awards for the Lakes restoration project.
