Churston Woods Appeal Update

Churston Woods Appeal Update

Published: 29 January 2018

We are thrilled to have raised £1,595 towards the replanting of Churston Woods so far, through the crowdfunding campaign and direct donations from the Friends of Berry Head and Euro-Gas Management Ltd. Torbay Council has also kindly offered to match the donations received for this cause by the Trust up to a maximum of £2,000. With the Forestry Commission grant of £10,500 and Torbay Council’s original donation of the £6,000 profit from timber sales, we have raised £19,690 against our £21,500 target, leaving £1,810 still to raise.

Whilst the available funding is enough that we can purchase all the trees and materials we need, we have had to reduce the extent to be planted by paid contractors and we will be asking volunteers to do more. Even so, we still need to continue to fund-raise in order to ensure that the planted trees are properly looked after for the next five years. Anything we raise over the £21,500 target will be used to fund the Friends of Churston Woods (for the purchase of tools and equipment) which is being set up to help care for the woods. We aim to start the planting in February and will release dates of community planting days as soon as these have been set.

Damian Offer, Director, Torbay Coast and Countryside Trust said:

“We are calling for help from the local community in the replanting of trees at Churston Woods. Whilst we can start the replanting, we still need to raise the last little bit of funding to ensure that we can give the wood the best chance of regenerating. Contractors will now be doing less, so we need your help to actually help plant more trees. If you would like to get involved, please contact us.”

If you would like to help with open community planting sessions please do contact us to register your interest and for more information.

We would of course be delighted to continue to receive donations. All donations are welcome no matter how small or large and you can do so via the Donations area of the Trust website, by calling us or by post.

We would also welcome any assistance in raising awareness and funds for this worthwhile project. Please do get in touch as we would love to have a chat with you about getting involved.

Thank you so much to everyone who has supported us and donated to this project so far. We are really grateful to you for every single contribution.
