Torbay’s first Seagrass Mooring was deployed at Fishcombe Cove in March 2017, this was a partnership project delivered by organisations of Sea Torbay, a Coastal Management Partnership. The project was funded by Natural England and was the final element of a wider project to help trial possible management measures for the Marine Conservation Zone (MCZ) and raise awareness within the community.
The project consisted of and has delivered the following 4 elements; Creation of a marine habitat app which is part of the Harbour app, interpretation boards for the 3 harbours (Torquay, Paignton & Brixham), purchased & installed 10 new marker buoys for the seagrass bed and the implementation and trial of the eco-mooring.
These four elements of the wider project were designed to provide as much information as possible on the value of the MCZ and the important wildlife and habitats that it has been designated for.
The mooring will be monitored during the 2017 season by Hannah Wilson, an MSc Student at Plymouth University. Monitoring will include 2 elements; 1) if there are any impacts of the mooring on the flora and fauna of the seagrass beds, 2) investigating the social science and behavioural change of users of the mooring. Hannah will be involved in dive surveys with the Community Seagrass Initiative (CSI) to monitor the direct habitat impacts of the mooring but also will be engaging with boating communities to monitor perception and use of the mooring. If you are a boat user and would like to participate in the survey, the short survey can be found here
