Sloes / Blackthorn

When to see:

Blackthorn is an ever-present feature of Berry Head with its thick thorns forming dense scrub areas. The beautiful white flowers in spring are followed by the attractive sloes - its purple fruit - from late summer.

Where to see:

All over Berry Head, this hardy shrub even thrives on the exposed windswept cliff tops.

Did you know?:

Blackthorn flowers before it produces leaves and it is considered unlucky to bring flowering branches of blackthorn into your home. The sloes are collected for making the drink Sloe Gin!
