Cockington Country Park
Only a mile from Torquay seafront, the Domesday Book village of Cockington has hardly changed through the centuries. Come and explore this special village, its historic 17th century manor house and the 460 acres of parkland, woodland and farmland surrounding it.
Craft Studios The Court and stableyard are home to eleven unique craft-workers who can be seen demonstrating their skills in the open studios. Visit Cockington Court Craft Studios here. Cockington Court and the Craft Studios remain open during the winter season and during the forthcoming Sea Change renovation project. For enquiries contact 01803 607230. The grounds around the Court are also full of interest. Behind the house are the peaceful walled Rose Garden and Organic Kitchen Garden. Walks and ancient paths lead from the Court all around the estate to the lakes and historic Gamekeepers Cottage - these are well-signposted and leaflets are also available.
Both the Court and Country Park are completely free to enter - you can easily lose yourself here for a whole day! Open daily all year round.
Organic Garden The walled demonstration organic garden is a treasure-trove of useful tips and ideas on wildlife-friendly gardening and successful vegetable-growing.
Located at the rear of Cockington Court, the garden was created in the 1700's to provide produce for the manor house. It was restored to its former function as a Kitchen Garden in 1990. Learn how we keep bugs off our plants without using harmful chemicals, how to make compost from kitchen and garden waste, how to attract beneficial wildlife and how to use beds and crop rotation techniques to make the most of our soil. The organic garden is open daily and staffed part-time by gardener Stephen Lloyd and his team of regular volunteers, who help Stephen to look after the garden whilst developing their skills at the same time. If you would like to find out more about volunteering, please contact us on 01803 606035. Cockington's Woodland Burial Site Set in Cockington Country Park on the edge of Torquay, Torbay's only Woodland Burial site offers a natural alternative to traditional burial. The site is part of Conqueror Wood, an 18 acre woodland planted in 2005 to celebrate the Battle of Trafalgar 200 celebrations. For further details click here. Cockington's Ark Play Area Cockington's Ark Play Area is open all year round and can be found at the rear of the court, behind the car park. The Ark is specifically designed to be used by disabled and able-bodied children. The play area was a joint effort between Friends of Special Needs Children (FOSNeC) and Torbay Coast and Countryside Trust. It includes a wheelchair seesaw, a turning stone, sound boxes, a singing stone, a water feature with seesaw pump and fountain, as well as slides and ramps.
