So far we have raised £1.5m to make this project happen.  We now need to raise just £90,000 over the next three years to enable us to draw down this funding.  This is a once in a lifetime opportunity for Berry Head and your donation can make a real difference to it's future.

The headland is at the mercy of the elements which are gradually eating away at the archeological remains.  Meanwhile scrub and  fast-growing weeds (including the beautiful but damaging valerian), have grown up and are undermining the fortifications.  Originally kept in check by sheep and goats, the scrub has also suffocated rare plants in many places.

Rare and delicate White Rock Rose at Berry Head Berry Head is also the victim of its own success - sensitive plants such as the rare White rock rose have been trampled by the feet of millions of visitors over the years.   Many visitors don't realize what amazing heritage is all around them here, partly because our signs and visitor facilities are sadly out of date.

In response to these problems, and to pull Berry Head "back from the edge", we have begun work on a 3-year £1.6m project, funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and a government grant called Sea Change. This project will reverse the declines in the site so that everyone - people and wildlife - can benefit. The project will safeguard Berry Head's heritage and give the visitor facilities a complete overhaul. Read more about our 'On the Edge' project here

View from Berry Head National Nature ReserveFor centuries Berry Head has been a landmark feature for local people - the Bay's first defence against attack - whether from the elements or foreign invaders.  Now, in the 21st century, Berry Head is also Torbay's single most important heritage site, designated and protected on all sides because of its rare wildlife and archaeological remains.  It is an important tourist treasure and a wildlife paradise; a place to walk, picnic and gaze at the great views across the Bay.

Many of Berry Head's special features are under threat.  Having protected us for so long, this ancient headland now needs our protection more than ever.  Berry Head is literally ‘On the Edge'.

COAST PATH APPEAL

The stunning views of Torbay have captured the hearts of visitors since the 1700s, and earned it the name "Queen of the Riviera".   Donations are being sought to re-create the Victorian vistas which our forefathers enjoyed and for which the English Riviera is famous.

Torbay Coast and Countryside Trust manages 22 miles of the South West Coast Path as it winds its way around the beaches and headlands of the resort from Maidencombe in the north of the Bay to Sharkham Point on the southern tip.  The path is by far one of the best ways to discover the bay's history, geology and wildlife whilst appreciating the beaches, rocks and far-reaching coastal views - stunning in both winter and summer.

The obscured view of Anstey's CoveMaintaining remote pathways, and particularly those that are well used by visitors, can be expensive and challenging. Over time paths have become eroded and stunning viewpoints obscured by overgrown foliage and encroaching woodland.   The project will also pay for the restoration of the seats in these coastal locations so that people can stop and admire the glorious views of TorBay.
