BERRY HEAD Future Heritage Plans

The Trust is working on a major lottery project for Berry Head called Berry Head Future Heritage, the Plans can be viewed below. A public meeting was held to consult on the plans on Wednesday July 6 at Brixham Town Hall. As part of our Heritage Lottery Fund Project we are consulting on the findings of the planning stage. A summary is given below.

This plan shows the main changes we aim to make on the ground over the next few years. The changes will be phased in gradually, not carried out all at once. Our aims are:

  1. To conserve the forts.
  2. To protect the rare plants and bats of Berry Head.
  3. To improve the landscape and remove “clutter”.
  4. To improve access to the heritage of Berry Head.
  5. To improve interpretation and learning opportunities for visitors.

During June and July 2005 the Trust will be consulting on the proposals – through exhibitions, questionnaires and the internet.

The Forts

Damaging vegetation will be stripped off and the walls re-pointed. The drawbridge entrances to the two forts will be re-created.

Landscape

Eyesores will be removed and the head returned to a more natural state. The biggest change will be moving the car park away from the South Fort to a less visible location.

Visitor Centre

The Bungalow will be extended and converted into the Visitor Centre and will be the point of arrival for most visitors. The old Visitor Centre will become a base for school groups and other learning activities.

Traffic and car parking

We want to re-site the car park onto the old MOD site and make a new road access into it. Traffic will exit past the Berry Head Hotel. Disabled drivers will still be able to access the Quarry and Café. There will be a regular bus service to the car park and footpaths to the site will be upgraded.

Paths

Some routes will be surfaced with rolled stone, to help the surrounding vegetation to recover. Some new routes will be created to encourage first-time visitors to see more of the site.

Grazing

Grazing needs to be extended, as it is the best way of looking after Berry Head's rare species. There will be three main grazing compartments: one for cattle in the existing meadow; and two for sheep. The North Fort will be grazed only in the winter months, and the area between the forts will be grazed in the summer months. The sheep will be Soays, which we use at Hope's Nose, and are very good at standing up to dogs!
