The LEA recommended supervision ratios for the type of outdoor activities we do are 1:6 for under 8 year olds and 1:15 for over 8 year olds. The adult component will be made up of the Trust Ranger/s, the visiting group leader and other teachers / teaching assistants / helpers.
Risk Assessments
The Trust writes full risk assessments for all the activities it runs for groups and sends these to schools after they have booked. The Ranger checks through the relevant risk assessment (R.A.) before meeting their group. We are happy to help schools to prepare their own R.A.
Medical Conditions
Please insure that visiting groups bring information on any medical conditions / allergies of members of the group and parental contact details and that these individuals are carrying any relevant medicines (eg asthma inhalers). The Ranger will ask for this information at the start of the visit.
Accidents and First Aid
It is the school's responsibility to ensure that one of the visiting staff is a qualified First Aider with a first aid kit. It is that member of visiting staff who will then administer any first aid. It is a recommended that this visiting staff member also carr ies a mobile phone and give s their number to the Ranger at the start of the visit. The Ranger will carry an approved First Aid Kit and a mobile phone as well . We complete accident reports for all accidents requiring first aid treatment.
The Rangers are unable to give out or administer any medicines, creams or sprays. For bites, stings or sprains we are only able to provide cold water to relieve symptoms.
Insurance
Torbay Coast and Countryside Trust has full public liability and employer's liability insurance.
Lost Property
Please report any items lost or found to the Ranger leading your group.
Health Risks in the Countryside and at the Coast
The risks of picking up an infection or illness from being in the countryside are very rare. We do however recommend a few simple precautions:
We recommend that all cuts and grazes are covered with a waterproof plaster. This is essential for all activities involving water.
We advise hand washing at the end of all activities. This is essential just before lunch.
We recommend long trousers to reduce the risk of cuts, grazes and stings.
We warn all groups to watch out for dogs mess during activities and try and choose locations free from fouling.
We recommend that children cover up in the sun. Please ask parents to provide appropriate sun cream and hats in the summer. This is the group leaders responsibility.
Children visiting the Seashore should wear appropriate shoes not open toed sandals. |
