HABITATS @ OCCOMBE FARM
Crops
  • Learn about the cereal crops grown and their uses.
  • See an arable crop if the right time of year.
  • Use 1880 winnower to speparate grain from chaff.
  • Mill some grain using grinding stone.
  • This activity can be linked with baking bread in the bakery.

Meadows

  • Survey two fields at the farm using quadrats e.g. inside and outside of the SSSI.
  • Identify some of the key species using spotter sheets and ID guides.
  • Wildflower Trail

Hedgerows
  • Learn how to age a hedgerow by surveying the number of species present. Identify hedgerow species using ID sheets. Involves measuring and counting the occurance of species. Also learning about the craft of hedge-laying.
  • Invertebrate survey of hedgerow and oak tree.

Woodland
  • Tree Trail
  • Calculating the age of an oak tree
  • Visit Occombe Woods which is adjacent to the farm for a longer walk with a group.
