EDUCATION - BERRY HEAD ACCESS AND FACILITIES

Access and Facilities

You can reach Berry Head on foot via the South West Coast Path or by vehicle, however owing to the narrow country lanes on the approach to the headland, large coaches find it very difficult to drive up to the car park. Coaches will drop people either at Shoalstone Beach car park on Berry Head Road or around the Landscove Holiday Park area on Gillards Road. It takes approximately 15 mins to walk up from these points with a group. Another option is by minibus which may be parked at ‘The Bungalow', which is the National Nature Reserve site office (although parking here can not be guaranteed), or in the main car park (pay and display).

Facilities :
NOTE there are no undercover facilities for groups on site.

The main visitor centre is adjacent to the car park and is staffed throughout the season (10-5pm Easter-Oct). Interpretation panels cover the Fortifications, Flora and Seabirds (the latter expanded by cliff tableaux and LIVE CCTV pictures from colony). The bat life and Geology have brief coverage as well.

The Artillary Store is an unmanned centre near the lighthouse, open most days throughout the year. Formation of the headland, mans occupation of the headland and migration on the headland are themes covered.

Toilets: There are toilets at the carpark (adjacent to main visitor centre) and at Café (open 10am – 6pm April – September) on the headland.

Meeting point if children get lost: Visitor Centre

Emergency Meeting Point: Car Park in front of Visitor Centre

Meals/Picnics: Main visitor Centre sells range of cold drinks, ice creams and snacks as well as information leaflets, books and toys. During the season The Fort Guardhouse Café offers a full range of hot and cold meals and drinks.

There is a small picnic area and large amenity grassland area adjacent to the carpark.

Equipment
All equipment required will be provided by Ranger staff.

All visits involve some walking on uneven/ natural surfaces, footwear appropriate to specific visit/ season is advised.
