Wiggly Worms and Compost Chaos
28th May 2010
Our wiggly worm and compost chaos event was a great success! We found plenty of worms in amongst the soil and the wood chippings in the new vegetable garden for our large wormery, as well as for the small glass jar wormeries that the children could take home. There are over 20 different types of worms that live in the UK, we managed to identify a few different species but many of them looked similar! The children had to create different layers of compostable materials intheir jars before putting the worms inside. This event required getting your hands dirty as the children had to mix the different composts from veggie and fruit peelings that have not been composted yet, to the fine soil like the compost that we grow our plants in. Once the worms were in the jars needed lids and covers to keep out the light. The children then gave their jars appropriate decorations to let people know what was lurking within (Not Jam!). Over a week or two the worms will mix the different layers so that the separate layers can no longer be seen. This is what the worms are usually doing in our gardens; however we don’t normally see it happening! We also had a goat making compostable seed pots out of newspaper and sowing some seeds in them. When the seedlings grow they can be planted in the ground, where the pots will be broken up in the soil. Finally to round off the event everyone had a go at making a wiggly worm mobile. With two pieces of willow tied together the children had a go at making wiggly worms out of multi coloured pipe cleaners and pieces of paper and dangling them off the end of each piece of wood. Everyone had lots of fun and learnt a lot about wiggly worms and compost!
