New education activities at Cockington
21st May 2010
The education rangers at Cockington have been working with schools on some exciting new activities. Our firecraft sessions are proving particularly popular. In this activity, children can learn basic fire lighting techniques. We collect our own firewood and discuss different types of tinder, then each group has a go at lighting the tinder from a spark using a fire steel. Successful groups should be able to keep their fire going long enough to toast a rewarding marshmallow!
For a real challenge, we now offer mini raft building too. We use recycled materials such as plastic bottles and foil trays for each group to create a raft. Once completed, we take our rafts down to the stream, strap on an Action Man and race them down the current! We give points for speed, creativity and teamwork.
