Woodland Produce
30th March 2010
This month the rangers have been running a few events, one of which being a coppicing event where people came out and helped the rangers in Occombe woods where we coppiced some mature hazel stools. This is beneficial to the wood land as it open's up glades allowing light in and encouraging the ground flora to flourish. It is also a sustainable way of managing our woodland as the coppiced stools will re grow offering a varied age of trees in the woodland and also allowing coppiced material to be harvested for use on the estate. The coppiced material from the wood was then used for a charcoal event that we were running. On this event members of the public came along with our volunteers to learn the ancient art of charcoal making with Stuart Murdoch, one of our rangers. Lots of charcoal bags were produced and are now on sale at the farm shop. James Law Assistant Ranger
