  HISTORY OF APPLE DAY

This year will be Cockington's 16th Apple Day festival. Apple Day was first initiated on 21 October 1990 by Common Ground – a London based charity campaigning for local distinctiveness. The charity wanted to preserve and raise awareness of the alarming rate at which orchards were disappearing, along with the local varieties, the recipes, the songs, stories, pruning and wassailing. Hundreds of Apple Day events are held nationwide at this time of year, to regain a sense of local pride by celebrating and demonstrating our local orchards, landscape and culture in the hope of deepening public interest.

Of the 6,000 varieties of apple once grown in Britain , only nine are now readily available in the supermarkets. Modern farming methods, rapid transport and the import of cheap fruit from abroad have led to the removal of many old orchards, along with new methods of horticultural production and storage, as well as new buildings and development. Devon alone has lost 90% of its total orchards since 1965.
