Wildlife at Occombe
Occombe is a wildlife haven and the Visitor Centre is a wealth of information on the species and habitats you can find on the farm. Through touchscreens view live pictures of wildlife captured on cameras across the site, see the day-to-day running of the farm and read all about where our food comes from.

Occombe represents a fragment of our farming past, a time when farming practices were more in tune with the wildlife that lived on our farms and with natural cycles. Recent research has shown both how damaging modern farming has been to wildlife and how beneficial organic and other environmentally friendly farming can be.

Species

Recent decades have seen a drastic decline in many species of farmland birds. A major reason is the change in farming practices, particularly the use of chemicals, the removal of hedgerows and the switch to autumn ploughing for cereals meaning there is no winter stubble. As well as supporting birds, Occombe provides a rich habitat for a wide range of insects many of which are food for the birds and their young :

Habitats

At the heart of the farm is a Site of Special Scientific Interest which includes wet woodland and meadows that have survived unchanged since before World War 2. Find out more about the various habitats on Occombe Farm, including native grassland, woodland and hedgerows :
